Baruntse Expedition

  • 33 Days

  • Mt. Baruntse

Mount Baruntse is located between Everest and Makalu, at 7129 meters. Colin Todd and Geoff Harrow were the first to summit this mountain on May 30, 1954. Many climbers have used this route.

Baruntse is an excellent next step and an ideal goal for those who have climbed to around 6000 m. It is remote and the crossroads of three glacier valleys, the Imja, the Hunku, and the Barun. It is objectively safe and provides a hugely rewarding climb among its highest peaks.

Program ( 33 Days )

When you arrive at Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport and have completed your customs and immigration procedures, our Creative Adventure Nepal agent will meet you at the arrival exit and accompany you to your pre-arranged hotel. You can spend the rest of your time relaxing in your hotel room or exploring the streets of Kathmandu.

We can explore the surrounding area and shop for the upcoming expedition to Baruntse Peak. In the afternoon, we can meet our guide for a pre-trip discussion. You can focus this day on preparing for your journey.

This day’s agenda is to visit the Ministry of Tourism and get a briefing on climbing the Baruntse peak. The briefing contains the expedition's nature, equipment, and team composition.

We begin our morning with a delicious break and catch an early flight to Lukla. You will experience a once-in-a-lifetime flight. After landing in Lukla, we start our five-hour trek to Chutanga. Today is a positioning day, a chance to stretch the legs and get clear of the trail.

Beginning our day with an energizing breakfast, we make our way from Chutanga toward Nau Lekha. You should note that the trek is about six hours. Naulekh Peak is located in the Solukhumbu district of Eastern Nepal and is part of the Mahalangur range of the Nepalese Himalayas. The Naulekh (also known as Nau Lekh) is a peak in Nepal's Khumbu area. We stay overnight at a camp.

After breakfast, we begin our journey and arrive at a beautiful viewpoint. We can take in the breathtaking scenery, including Mera Peak and Hinku Valley views. Then, on a narrow track with Mera Peak towering nearby, we journey through bamboo and pine trees. On our journey, we will likely see wild creatures such as sloths, jungle cats, and other species. We continue our journey along a ridge before ascending to Kothe. Overnight stay at a camp.

Our adventure begins on a route that runs beside the Hinku Khola. We hike for a while before stopping for lunch in Gondishung, a summer herders' community on the Hinku Drangka's west bank. Also, we will pass a 200-year-old Lungsumgba Gomba, where we can observe inscriptions on a rock. After a short walk from the Gomba, we will reach Thangnak. Overnight stay at a camp in Thagnak for the night.

Today, we'll travel to Khare. We continue the Dig Glacier's lateral moraine to Dig Kharka, which gives superb views of the Charpate Himal. The route rises steeply to our camping place at Khare, passing through moraines and to the snouts of the Hinku Nup and Shar Glaciers. From Khare, the views of Mera Peak's north face are breathtaking. Stay at a camp in Khare.

From Khare, we will begin our trek toward Mera Base Camp. The Mera Base Camp sits on an elevation of 5660m. You can soak in the astonishing view of the Mera Peak. If it has recently snowed, the path leading up to Mera High Camp can be treacherous due to many crevasses. A big mound marks the summit, which we trek up to. We set up our high camp at a spot that offers spectacular views of the dawn and sunset and the Himalayan panorama. Overnight stay at camp.

As we reach Seto Pokhari or White Lake, we notice the first of a succession of lakes that comprise the upper Hongu Basin. Today's trip takes us into the spectacular alpine environment of the Hongu Valley. Chamlang (7321m) lies to our right, hanging glaciers on its South-West and North-West slopes. Overnight stay in camp.

After breakfast, we set off on our journey. Our path winds through a green valley. We cross Peak 41 and Hunku Peak to Mt Baruntse's base camp. Camping for the night in Baruntse Base Camp.

We will establish our camp in the Advanced Base Camp at 6,000 meters, near a glacier at the foot of the Southeast Ridge. We need to schedule adequate time for acclimatization and weight carrying for our supply in Baruntse Advance Base Camp (BABC) and Camp one. Camp one lies at an elevation of 6450m on the South-East Ridge.

The path can get gradually difficult above Camp one as we ascend 45-degree snow slopes. On the way up to Camp One, a fixed-line would be constructed below the West / East Col. The path above Camp two requires some maintenance, which our Sherpa guides will look after.

The entire duration of the Bruntse expedition will be on camp.

After a successful expedition of Mt. Baruntse Peak, we will descend towards Setopokhari. Our experts will help you trek downwards to the lower altitude. Overnight stay at the Setopokhari camp.

Like how we climbed up the route towards Baruntse peak, we will take the same path and climb down from Setopokhari to Mera Base Camp. Make sure you soak in all the purity and beautiful sight of the glistening lake of Setopokhari. Overnight stay at Mera Base Camp.

Our route continues from Mera Base Camp to Khare. The steep descent can be pretty dangerous, so we advise you to be careful and move at your own pace while coming down your path. Don’t forget to keep your ignited passion burning to beat the cold weather. We will set up camp in Khare.

We begin our day with some energizing breakfast and move early on the day towards Thagnag. The steep descent continues as the elevation dips. The trek from Khare to Thagnag will take about five to six hours. However, the timing depends on your speed and the number of rests you take between. Overnight stay at camp in Thagnag.

Passing through the Hinku Khola again, we make way to Kothey from Thagnag after breakfast. The trek is roughly four to five hours, considering rest stops and lunch in between. After we have descended to Kothey, we will set up our camp and prepare some delicious soul filling dinner. Our expert guides and fellow travelers will jump up to dance and sing while cooking the meal. So make sure you enjoy every single moment.

After breakfast, we begin our trek again through the rhododendron forests on the west side of Hinku Valley and Tuli Kharka. We make our way to Chutanga. While you trek, you can rest to soak in the picturesque beauty of Mera Peak on your way back. After a tiring day, you can end it with delicious local meals. Overnight stay at camp.

Starting the day fresh, we eat our nutritious breakfast and begin our trek from Chutanga to Lukla. We will go through pine forests and shrubs, cross rivers on bridges, and pass by a few farms. The fresh air and the beautiful settlement will take your breath away. We end our final trek in Lukla. The Baruntse expedition has finally come to an end. Overnight stay in Lukla.

Today is the day we fly back to Kathmandu. Make sure you bid a proper farewell to the magnificent mountains and thank the local people for their hospitality. After we land in Kathmandu, you can either rest in the hotel or maybe go for some fun nightlife.

The transition from the mountains to the city can be overwhelming at first, but the charm of Kathmandu will make it easy for you. Kathmandu is one of the most heritage-rich cities that you can tour. You can shop for some souvenirs to take back home or stroll casually through the streets. We end our journey with a feast and a cultural program.

The day to return to your home is finally here. After breakfast, a representative from Creative Adventure Nepal will take you to the airport and drop you off. We hope you had the most fantastic time here in Kathmandu.
